The patterns were printed in full color on small cards gathered into portfolios.­ The original cards measured only a few inches and the charts have been enlarged for easier use.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eMany of these charts use whole stitches, making them suitable for both needlepoint and cross stitch. Others are worked almost entirely in backstitches to produce airy, ornate patterns of Blackwork-like filigree.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eDesigns charted on graph paper are a universal language, with each square on the pattern representing a single stitch.
